Então um conhecido lhe oferece a oportunidade de tocar numa festa, onde acaba por desmaiar... porque não comera e porque se encantara com a própria música. Em "O futuro presidente", contam-se os sonhos de um pobre costureira com o futuro do filhinho que dorme a seu lado, sonhos estes interrompidos pela notícia de que o marido perdera o emprego.

Aos 15 anos de idade, a narradora-protagonista de "O último raio de luz" se apaixona pelo médico que cuidava de uma doença que tirava aos poucos a sua visão. Um dia, ela o flagra conversando com a sua irmã mais velha e isso é traumático. Já em "A morte da velha", Amanda é uma mulher já idosa, que vive em uma cadeira de rodas. Passou a sua vida toda se sacrificando pelo irmão, Luciano, que dá pouco valor a isso.
