In the Avu Observatory" is a short story by H. G. Wells (1866-1946), first published in the Pall Mall Budget on 9 August 1894, and subsequently included in The Stolen Bacillus and Other Incidents (1895) and The Country of the Blind and Other Stories (1911). It describes an attack by a large bat-like creature on an assistant at a remote observatory in Borneo.

In the pitch black of the observatory, he suddenly finds himself fighting for his life against...what?

El observatorio de Avu, en Borneo, se alza sobre el espolón de la montaña. Al norte se eleva el viejo cráter, negra silueta nocturna contra el insondable azul del cielo. Desde el pequeño edificio circular con su cúpula bulbosa, las laderas descienden abruptamente internándose en los negros misterios del bosque tropical que está debajo.
