The emergence of secret societies has always been one of the most fascinating facets of civilization, a phenomenon that has been around since the birth of mankind. Even centuries after some of these groups were founded, they remain well-known, such as the Knights Templar, a group of armored warriors who hailed from the Holy Land. But of all of history's secret societies, the legend behind one's name surpasses them all: the Illuminati.

In 1776 Adam Weishaupt, a respected German professor of Canon Law, founded a covert revolutionary group - The Illuminati - a secret society dedicated to destroying repressive regimes and shaping a world government in terms of Liberty and Equality. These ideals surfaced with violent emphasis during the French Revolution, which many saw as the work of Illuminati agitators. The Jesuit Abbé Augustin Barruel was one such.

Accusés d’être à l’origine de la Révolution française, d’avoir noyauté les États-Unis d’Amérique dès leur naissance ou encore d’avoir précipité l’effondrement de l’Union soviétique, les Illuminati font les beaux jours des théories complotistes les plus extravagantes depuis plus de deux siècles.Derrière ces affabulations, une société secrète, les Illuminaten, a bel et bien existé, en Bavière. Fondé à la fin du XVIIIe siècle par Adam Weishaupt, alias Spartacus, ce club très sélect inspiré de la franc-maçonnerie a attiré parmi les plus radicaux tenants des Lumières et a très vite été interdit.

Maria Teresa fondò inoltre collegi per l'educazione e la formazione del personale statale.

Ci sono documenti che parlano da soli. Uno di questi è l'editto del novembre 1786 con cui l'illuminato Pietro Leopoldo (Granduca di Toscana dal 1765 al 1790, quando succede al fratello Giuseppe II alla guida dell'Impero) promulga il nuovo Codice criminale, poi detto toscano o leopoldino, abolendo, per la prima volta nella storia degli Stati moderni, la pena di morte, la tortura, il delitto di lesa maestà e la confisca dei beni del condannato.

Il termine "assolutismo illuminato" fa riferimento alle idee e ai comportamenti di quei sovrani europei che nel '700 dichiaravano di volersi servire del potere per il bene dei loro sudditi e che si professavano amici e discepoli dei philosophes francesi. Il più famoso di questi fu il re di Prussia Federico II il Grande, scrittore prolifico, musicista di un certo valore, irreligioso, amico di Voltaire.
