I protagonisti sono Rospo, Tasso, Talpa, che rappresentano la società rurale inglese dell'epoca. L'autore, Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) lo scrisse per il figlio che soffriva di gravi problemi di salute e che morì poi suicida a venti anni.
