In Kristiania, dem heutigen Oslo, kämpft ein junger Schriftsteller Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts um Anerkennung für seine Werke. Doch trotz großer Begabung reicht das Geld, das er verdient, kaum zum Leben. Obdachlos und halb verhungert schleppt er sich durch die Straßen der norwegischen Hauptstadt, mal voller Hoffnung, mal verzweifelt und dem Wahnsinn nahe.

Where did I come from? Who were my parents? What made me…me? It became the fire in my veins.
