When the luxurious overnight passenger train from Calais to the Riviera, known as the Blue Train, arrives in Nice, a guard goes into the compartment of American heiress, Ruth Kettering and attempts to wake her. Unfortunately, she will never wake up, as she is dead, having been killed by a heavy blow to her head, disfiguring her almost beyond recognition. What is more, her precious ruby, known as the 'Heart of Fire', is missing. The prime suspect is Ruth’s estranged husband, but detective Hercule Poirot, who also just happens to be a passenger on the train, is not convinced.

ظن الجميع أن حادث سقوط اميلي أرونديل على كرة من المطاط تركت على السلالم قد تسبب فيه كلبها ولكنها كلما فكرت في سقوطها أكثر زاد اقتناعها بأن أحد أقاربها كان يحاول أن يقتلها، في السابع عشر من شهر ابريل كتبت شكوكها في خطاب وأرسلته الى المحقق هيركيول بوارو، الغريب في الأمر أنه لم يتلق الخطاب حتى الثامن والعشرين من شهر يونيو.. بعد وفاة اميلي بالفعل.

لم يحتج هيركيول بوارو لكل مهاراته البوليسية لادراك أن هناك شيئا ما يزعج سكرتيرته الآنسة ليمون، فقد اقترفت ثلاثة أخطاء بخطاب بسيط للغاية، يبدو أن انتشار هوس السرقة ببيت الطالبات الذي تعمل به شقيقتها يشتت انتباه مساعدته هذه المعروفة بكفاءتها، ونظراً لأن الفترات اليائسة تستدعي اجراءات يائسة من وجهة نظره يوافق المحقق العظيم على اجراء التحقيق، يبدو أن بوارو لم يكن على دراية بأن اليأس هو الدافع المشترك بينه وبين القاتل .

ها قد فشلت تجربتي. وضعت قلمي جانبًا وفكرت في تمزيق الورقة، ثم في النهاية، سحقتها بيدي، وشكلت منها كرة غير منتظمة، ورميتها نحو النار المشتعلة في المدفأة، لكني أخطأت الهدف.
