After narrowly escaping with his life at the hands of a murderous Hollywood pimp, detective Happy Doll, bullet-ridden but healing, has landed on a remote Mexican beach. In a humble shack and with his dog for company, Doll settles into a peaceful idyll of Buddhist study. But then trouble, as it always does, comes to paradise. Doll is the witness to a murder for which he is framed, and now, with an expired passport and the Mexican authorities on his tail, he must sneak across the border back to L.A. by any means necessary, with the goal of bringing the true murderer to justice.

When two bodies are found on the back lawn of the Hawthorne estate, the police find private investigator Milo Rathkey already on the scene, dragged into the investigation by Mary Alice Bonner, who had hoped to use Hawthorne for her annual New Year’s Eve party. The dead are identified as a young couple who were touring their wedding venue the night before. The police think the bride-to-be was the target. Milo suspects the killer was after the groom. All Mary Alice Bonner knows is that it’s hard to plan a party with bodies on the lawn.

For over five years, an individual has been writing checks that do not have sufficient funds in the accounts. He is able to obtain state driver's licenses that he uses to open checking accounts with just enough money to keep the accounts open. He does not really steal other people's identification, he just makes up the names that he uses. For over five years, he has cost communities in Southern California thousands of dollars and has caused police departments to run in circles trying to catch him.
