Bazza Mackenzie, Pompey’s top criminal, is now beyond reach of DI Joe Faraday. Hungry for power and profile, Bazza decides to stand for Portsmouth North in the general election. And his campaign is taking the city by storm. But politics is an expensive business and so Bazza turns to ex-cop Paul Winter to call in a multi-million pound drug debt. Winter, though, is facing a nightmare of his own and knows his time with Bazza has to end.

When the committee members of the Oldford Literary Festival all receive anonymous letters telling them to resign or die, it marks the start of an unusual case for Chief Superintendent Lambert and DS Hook. All of the members identify one man as being capable of such a thing: Peter Preston, a self-important cultural snob who is in disagreement with the head of the festival, Marjorie Dooks, over what he sees as the dumbing down of the events programme. But could a disagreement over a literary festival actually lead to murder?

He is able to obtain state driver's licenses that he uses to open checking accounts with just enough money to keep the accounts open. He does not really steal other people's identification, he just makes up the names that he uses. For over five years, he has cost communities in Southern California thousands of dollars and has caused police departments to run in circles trying to catch him.
