Die junge Theresa arbeitet 1943 als Sekretärin im Lebensborn-Heim "Pommern" in Bad Polzin. Eines Tages kommt mit einem Transport polnischer Kinder, die eingedeutscht werden sollen, ein Junge ins Heim, der stumm zu sein scheint. Theresa nimmt sich des Dreijährigen an und animiert ihn zum Sprechen, weil sie nicht will, dass er als "beschädigte Ware" aussortiert wird. Denn die SS, deren oberster Führer Heinrich Himmler den Lebensborn-Verein 1935 gegründet hatte, um das Land mit "gutem Blut" zu versorgen, kann nur einwandfreies "Material" gebrauchen.

July 1, 1863. Confederate troops smash through the Union lines outside the small town of Gettysburg, setting the stage for two more days of bloody and unrelenting battle.
