In spätromantischen Gedichten verbindet er Empfindungsreichtum mit Skepsis und Ironie („Buch der Lieder“ 1827; „Romanzero“ 1851). Sein geistvoller und plaudernder Prosastil („Reisebilder“ 1826 bis 1831) machte ihn zum Begründer des modernen Feuilletonismus.

Nach einem Liebeserlebnis begibt sich ein Wanderer ohne Ziel hinaus in die Winternacht. Während der Sänger zu Beginn des Textes noch voller Hoffnung erscheint, wandelt sich die Stimmung im Verlauf und aus dem Reisenden wird ein Irrfahrer, dessen Streben nach Glück nicht erfüllt wird.
