Four hundred years in the future, the most dangerous criminals are kept in suspended animation aboard prison ships and 'rehabilitated' in a shared virtual reality environment. But Miska Storrow, a thief and hacker with a background in black ops, has stolen one of these ships and created her own private indentured army: the Bastard Legion. In Friendly Fire, the Bastard Legion are hired to pull off a daring power-armoured heist of propriety tech. Getting the tech will be hard. Getting off the planet, deadly.

Captain Genys Arroyan has a problem with her shiny new command - the dregs of the universe are laughing. While the Defender is in spacedock, getting upgrades, Genys has to deal with mind-hunters and farting fur balls, merchants-of-insanity and diplomatic intrigue. Her Chief of Talents is hiding from forced matrimony, and her new crewmembers aren't too happy to be transferred to the Nanny Ship.

Having ended the threat of his father's oldest enemy and the group he controlled, Clayton Sanders believes he can finally put his feet up a bit and relax. Figuratively of course, since there is no relaxing on a farm and ranch. But some peace and quiet will be greatly appreciated and welcome. Too bad he won't get it. With the remainder of his old team on their way, Clay starts to think he might be able to breathe easier. Sure, they did say they were running from a big problem out west, but that's out west, right?
