Death by Footnote is a historical fiction podcast that challenges authors to a monthly prompt. After writing a short story that meets the assigned genre and historical niche, they read them aloud and nitpick on historical detail, historical efficacy, and good storytelling

Lying and Making a Living - the title from a Barry Hannah quote - picks up where Short Mean Fiction leaves off. It contains more of the irreverent, hard-hitting, exhilarating, ironic, and emblematic prose we’ve come to expect from the writer and painter William Dunlap. Short Mean Fiction, his first gathering of stories, promised words and pictures, whereas Lying and Making a Living delivers fiction with footnotes in all their subtle explanation and incongruity.

In 1901, Arthur Conan Doyle "resurrected" Holmes for what turned out to be his most popular story, The Hound of the Baskervilles. It first appeared as nine episodes in the British edition of The Strand Magazine. The first episode was accompanied by a brief footnote that acknowledged the assistance provided by a young journalist called Bertram Fletcher Robinson. Almost immediately, there was speculation about the extent of Fletcher Robinson's contribution to the narrative of the story. Fletcher Robinson's early death did little to end such speculation.
