Faust is a tragic play in two parts that reworks the late medieval myth of a brilliant but disillusioned scholar who makes a deal with the devil. Faust is considered by many to be Goethe's masterpiece and the greatest work of German literature. Part I sets out Faust’s despair, his pact with Mephistopheles, and his love for Gretchen. Part II deals with Faust’s life at court, the wooing and winning of Helen of Troy, and his purification and redemption.

Johann Wolfgang Goethe was a colossus of German literature and a true Renaissance man. A novelist, dramatist, poet, humanist, scientist and philosopher, he wrote the first international bestseller, The Sorrows of Young Werther, and his epic masterpiece Faust is one of the most famous and celebrated dramas of all time.

Goethe’s two-part dramatic work, Faust, based on a traditional theme, and finally completed in 1831, is an exploration of that restless intellectual and emotional urge which found its fullest expression in the European Romantic movement, to which Goethe was an early and major contributor. Part I of the work outlines a pact Faust makes with the devil, Mephistopheles, and encompasses the tragedy of Gretchen, whom Faust seduces.

Wenn Goethe im ersten Teil des Faust noch zwischen Gelehrten- und Gretchendrama unterteilt, so ist im zweiten Teil ganz klar Faust und seine Entwicklung Hauptthema. Nachdem er mit Mephistopheles am Ende des ersten Teils die Flucht ergriff, entwickelt er sich im zweiten Teil stetig weiter, wird Künstler, Zeitreisender, Gatte der schönen Helena, Herrscher - es ist ein wahres Füllhorn der menschlichen Entwicklung, das Goethe hier ausschüttet! Ein großartiger Reigen überschäumender Kreativität, das ist der Tragödie zweiter Teil.

Mephisto und Faust - Goethes Faust I und II als Zweierbeziehung. Eine der bedeutendsten, in jeder Hinsicht spektakulären Rollen Fred Dürens war der Faust in der legendären Inszenierung von Adolf Dresen und Wolfgang Heinz im Jahr 1968. Aus der Frage, wie Düren den Faust wohl heute spielen würde, entstand der Plan, der Auffassung von einem jungen (seinerzeit für zu jung geltenden!) Faust nun eine neue Interpretation mit einem alten, erfahrungsreichen Faust gegenüberzustellen.

Mit dieser Aufnahme wird zum ersten Mal in Deutschland der Versuch gemacht, ein großes dramatisches Gedicht der Weltliteratur als Ganzes auf der Schallplatte wiederzugeben: Goethes "Faust" in der dramaturgischen Einrichtung und unter der Regie von Gustaf Gründgens. Es mag daran erinnert werden, dass dies genau 125 Jahre nach der Uraufführung des ersten Teils in Braunschweig (1829) und genau 100 Jahre nach der des zweiten in Hamburg (1854) geschieht.

Goethe, der wohl größte deutsche Dichter, zeichnet für einige der wichtigsten Dramen verantwortlich. Unter dem Begriff Urfaust versteht man Goethes ersten Entwurf für sein Literaturwerk Faust. Er entstand in den Jahren zwischen 1772 und 1775, parallel mit Die Leiden des jungen Werthers in Frankfurt am Main. Goethes Arbeitsprozess am Urfaust ist nicht mehr zu rekonstruieren. Auslöser für die Entwicklung des Urfausts war die Verurteilung und Hinrichtung der Kindesmörderin Susanna Margaretha Brandt. Vermutlich verfolgte Goethe den gesamten Prozess, da nach seinem Tod in seinem Haus Abschriften von Prozessakten gefunden wurden. Es existiert nur eine einzige Abschrift des Urfaust vom Hoffräulein Luise von Göchhausen.

Eines der größten Werke der "klassischen" deutschen Literatur und zugleich eines der meistgefürchteten Schullektüren. Hier in der Nacherzählung von Barbara Kindermann. Und so mancher dürfte beim Hören verblüfft feststellen: Es ist ein Werk, das sich seinen herausgehobenen Status bis heute durchaus zu Recht bewahrt hat. Ein Werk zugleich, das sich leider allzu vielen verschließt, weil sich ihnen der zeitgemäße Zugang nicht eröffnet. Dieses Hörbuch liefert endlich Abhilfe.
