Su nombre Padre Daniel proviene de la parábola del Viejo Testamento en la que Daniel, el judío que fue enviado por el Rey Darío a la cueva de leones por orar a Dios 3 veces por día. Dios cerró la boca de los leones y Daniel salvó su vida. Oswald Rufeisen sobrevivió en la guarida de los leones cuando trabajó de traductor para los nazis durante la Segunda Guerra mundial y decidió tomar su nombre. Como monje era Hermano Daniel y como sacerdote era el Padre Daniel.
