Fleeing the Solar System after an attack by North America, the three Home habitats now have to seek their own fortunes. Heather, Sovereign of Central on the Moon, saved them, but now has to make certain the USNA can never threaten them again. Lee finds she has to grasp authority and act for the Red Tree Mothers and herself to repossess the planet Providence she and Gordon discovered, while the Claims Commission on Earth has collapsed without the leadership of North America.

A new species has jumped into the Sol system for a quick look, leading the Stryx to assign humans to the greeting mission. Dorothy and Kevin leave on a trading mission in his new ship, bringing the dog, and Samuel and Vivian start at the Open University. 

The MacMurchaids and their group work on searching for facilities which the trickster faction might control. They determine that at least one on Lunar Sister might be such a facility and there are many on Brother Mars. Before they investigate any of these sites they must prepare and gather everything they might need.
