The Chrysallaman Empire made contact in 1947. Their mission was simple: find a suitable planet for colonization. Rich with land, minerals and water, Earth - HG-281- could boast only of a primitive race of defenders known as Humans, bugs who could be easily squashed by the might of a single Chrysallaman's mind. When a Chrysallaman ship is unexpectedly brought down in Roswell, New Mexico, the aliens return to their home planet to regroup, leaving behind a broken ship and a young alien boy.

The human race is in trouble. After narrowly claiming victory in the first invasion, an assault by advanced militaristic aliens armed with light speed capable spacecraft is a continuing threat. Even so, Chrysalis is in danger, and Whatsit is determined to rescue his fellow Chrysallamans. It's a task he knows he cannot accomplish without the help of his human brethren. With the threat of future attacks looming, the humans will have to decide whether it's best to go on the defensive at home on Earth.

Despite amazing technological advancements, life in the 2050s hasn’t become any easier. Rustin struggles to find his calling amid poverty, geopolitical tensions, and a world where one must compete for even the most basic jobs against both fellow humans and AI machines. All he knows for sure is that there’s a better life out there, and he’s willing to leave home to find it. Oddly enough, Rustin’s journey eventually lands him a bizarre job on Mars, the possible future home to all humankind. All he has to do is survive for two years in his new job as a scarecrow.
