Six years after the events of The Poison Maker, the oppressive government maintains its totalitarian control across The Raft, and Professor savannah Selbourne is now their pawn. Despite her humble beginnings, she has become an essential voice in the regime. Yet she yearns to break free.

The end of the world comes to an ordinary Somerset street with no warning, no sirens, and a frankly insulting lack of organisation. It starts with a barbecue. A few bad jokes. A street that thinks the end of the world is something that happens on telly.

A decade ago, unrest over population control methods resulted in the tragic death of Ava’s parents. Left orphaned, Ava is driven by a singular mission: to secure the youth-restoring drug, Pres-X, for her elderly aunt. Since the unrest, fertile women’s rights have been severely curtailed. Such oppressive restrictions force Ava to explore morally grey methods to obtain the funds required to secure the drug.

Iris was born twenty-eight years ago during the unrest, when every birth required a life to be sacrificed. Since then, fertile women’s rights have been curtailed in further attempts to reduce the population. Deemed as a dangerous nuisance, restrictions are in place on where fertile women can work and socialise, as well as what internet access they are allowed. Iris has been a good citizen and has followed every rule imposed upon her. But when new and even more sinister methods to reduce the population are enforced, Iris can’t accept it any more.

In the near future, Hannah (age 16), her younger brother Loghan (age 11), and her younger sister Emma (age 5) are on the run aided by a man named Shane. Hannah hears that Shane’s a kidnapper on the news. Is he out to help or put them in more danger? A few months earlier, Hannah, Loghan, and Emma lived in one of the nicest suburban neighborhoods in Potsville, Indiana. Emma’s health has been deteriorating for some time, but now they’re noticing.

Kyra has always made it a habit to follow the rules. Or, more specifically, she has done so in hopes of staying out of sight and out of mind to those around her. Ever since she was taken prisoner, even with the feelings she's kept towards those responsible for killing her mother, she's never had an issue keeping her head down. That is, until she and her entire prison sector are relocated, and those feelings begin to bubble to the surface as tensions grow.
