"The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall" (1835) is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. The story is regarded as one of the early examples of the modern science fiction genre. The story traces the journey of a voyage to the Moon. The story opens with the delivery to a crowd gathered in Rotterdam of a manuscript detailing the journey to the moon by Hans Pfaall. The manuscript sets out in detail how Hans Pfaall, a mender of bellows, contrived to reach the Moon by benefit of a revolutionary new balloon and a device which compresses the vacuum of space into breathable air.

Aber wo ist der Reiter? Ein junger Mann wird unter Mordanklage gestellt. Aber noch immer hat man keinen Leichnam gefunden.

Leonie hat vor ihrer Abreise aus New Orleans eine Entdeckung gemacht, die tödliche Konsequenzen für Poe haben kann. Sie reist nach New York, um ihn zu warnen. In einem Hotel entdeckt sie im Gästebuch seinen Namenszug. Doch dann gerät sie in die Hände des verbrecherischen Dr. Baker. Er braucht Informationen - um sie zu bekommen, ist Baker ist zu allem entschlossen. Und Leonie muss um ihr Leben erzählen.

Poe weiß nun, wo er den finsteren Dr. Baker finden kann. Doch dazu braucht er noch einen Schlüssel. Der einzige Weg führt durch die Katakomben der alten Kirche von Father O'Neill. Dieser ist rätselhaft wie eine Sphinx. Und er hat die Antwort auf eine von Poes drängendsten Fragen.
