Giovanni Boccaccio, Dante, and Petrarch were the leading lights in a century that is considered the beginning of the Italian Renaissance. The Decameron, or Ten Days' Entertainment, is his most famous work, a collection of stories considered representative of the Middle Ages, as well as a product of the Renaissance.

Composed in the early 1350s, in the wake of the Black Death, The Decameron comprises 100 short stories from all over the world, reset by Boccaccio among the flourishing merchant classes of Renaissance Italy. Boccace a trente-cinq ans en 1348 quand, "juste effet de la colère de Dieu", éclate la grande peste qui flagelle l'Italie. Composé dans les années qui suivent, le "Livre des dix journées" s'ouvrira sur ce tableau apocalyptique, à la force grandiose et terrible, qui n'a rien à envier à la description de la peste d'Athènes chez Thucydide. C'est en effet dans ce contexte que sept jeunes filles courtoises et trois jeunes hommes qui ont conservé leur noblesse d'âme se retirent sur les pentes enchanteresses de Fiesole.

Alla metà del XIV secolo Giovanni Boccaccio immaginò che, per sfuggire alla peste che nel 1348 stava decimando Firenze, sette giovani donne e tre giovani uomini si ritirarono in campagna, ingannando il tempo mangiando, danzando e, soprattutto, raccontandosi storie. Nacque così il Decameron, una raccolta di cento straordinari racconti, uno dei testi fondamentali della nascente letteratura italiana ed europea.

Fernab der Stadt geben sich die Freunde Spielen und Tanz hin und erzählen einander frivole Geschichten von glücklich Verliebten, gehörnten Ehemännern und listigen Frauen. Zehn Tage bleiben sie auf dem Landgut, und am Ende haben sie hundert Geschichten beisammen - auf diese Weise, so erzählt es Boccaccio, sei das »Decamerone« entstanden.
