Before throwing himself from the window of his attic, the untitled protagonist writes some notes related to his mental state. Then, he begins to recall an old story that happened in the years of the First World War: suddenly, he finds himself a prisoner of a German ship in the Pacific Ocean. After only five days, the protagonist manages to escape with a raft. Wandering for days, adrift in the sea, one afternoon he finds himself stranded on a disquieting and apparently deserted island and, from there, things only get stranger.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937), who wrote as H. P. Lovecraft, was an American author who achieved posthumous acclaim for his outstanding and influential works of horror fiction. Dagon is the story of a shipwrecked sailor who comes face to face with an ancient and terrible sea-god, Dagon. So horrifying is his ordeal that he spends the rest of his life trying to escape the awful clutches of Dagon. In the end there is only one way out.

Veröffentlicht wurde die Geschichte erstmals 1919 in der Novemberausgabe von The Vagrant, einer Amateurpresse-Zeitschrift der damaligen Zeit, die von W. Paul Cook herausgegeben wurde. Lovecraft wurde nach eigenen Worten durch einen Traum zu dieser Geschichte inspiriert.

Nuestro protagonista es un adicto a las drogas que tiene algunas ideas suicidas por un incidente que le ocurrió durante la guerra mundial cuando era un oficial de la marina mercante Cuando su barco iba ser capturado por los alemanes consiguió escapar en una lancha salvavidas que navegó a la deriva durante varios días hasta que encalló en una especie de tierra, que era negra hasta dónde alcanzaba la vista.

Una pequeña embarcación de turistas se ve afectada por un mal temporal, el yate en el que viajaban choca con unas rocas, provocando que los tripulantes tengan que pedir ayuda en una pequeña comunidad que esta a unos metros de ahí. Cuando llegan al pueblo en busca de auxilio se encuentran con una misteriosa sorpresa.

Un antiguo marinero escribe su carta de suicidio relatando los motivos que le han llevado a querer poner fin a su vida. Cuando el barco en el que navegaba fue capturado por soldados alemanes, consiguió huir con provisiones en un pequeño bote. Se encontraba completamente perdido en el océano, cuando un día se despertó y su bote estaba encallado en un suelo negro que llegaba hasta donde la vista alcanzaba y despedía un olor nauseabundo. Allí encontraría misteriosos restos de seres desconocidos y a una criatura monstruosa que le perseguiría en sus recuerdos el resto de su vida.
