Merimee's most famous work is the novella Carmen, a story about jealousy and unfaithfulness. It inspired George Bizet's world-famous Opera-Comique. Some 50 movie adaptations have been made from the story, several of which are filmings of the opera.

Dois textos com o tom naturalista característico de Carmen Dolores. "Que é na realidade uma ruptura de verdadeira paixão senão uma espécie de morte?", pergunta o narrador de "O guarda-roupa", questionando o desejo de vingança da personagem Helena Fragoso diante da descoberta de que seu antigo amante tem outra mulher. Já em "Sob as cinzas", uma surpreendente revelação – uma paixão adormecida da doce tia Filomena – convida à discussão da força dos sentimentos na velhice.
