“Ladies and gentlemen, the Bronx is burning!” This phrase was supposedly uttered by announcers during the 1977 World Series as flames rose above Yankee Stadium, and it became a defining expression of a turbulent time in American history. Throughout the 1970s, a wave of arson coursed through American cities, destroying entire neighborhoods home to poor communities of color.

Today, public discourse often focuses on the emotional weight of terms like “DEI,” while neglecting the historical context that gave rise to them. As a result, our reactions are based more on feelings and emotions, rather than on understanding. That lack of understanding prevents us from addressing the real roots of inequality and from working toward a more balanced and just society. This book will help us dig deeply into our own personal views as it relates to our feelings and views when it comes to racism.

Born in Chains is a first-hand account of living in abject poverty in South Africa. Clinton Chauke was born in 1994 into a Vatsonga household and has faced all the challenges of growing up at the edges of society: first in rural Limpopo, then in a village bordering the Kruger National Park, and finally in a squatter camp near Pretoria. Navigating a world of racism and tribalism and confronting urban life as a country ‘bumpkin’, the author depicts the lifelines and pitfalls of a young life.
