At the Bay is a 1922 short story by Katherine Mansfield. It was first published in the London Mercury in January 1922 in twelve sections, and later reprinted in The Garden Party and Other Stories (1922) with a short descriptive coda which is now the thirteenth section. The story represents Mansfield’s best mature work, a luminous example of her literary impressionism. While writing it at the Chalet des Sapins, she was coming to terms with her relationship with Murry and with her own origins and identity.

An anonymous Christmas Angel gifts a group of people who have never met one another and appear to be totally unrelated a free stay at the Inn at Holiday Bay the week before Christmas. Once the group gets together and begin to compare notes, they start to wonder who paid for their stay and how they are related to both the benefactor and each other.

Abby is offered the chance to participate in an author event being held at Firehouse Books with one of her own favorite authors. When the guest author turns up dead, Abby realizes that clues to the author’s death could be found in the new novel. Abby joins Colt as he investigates the death of a local man who died after eating pudding dosed with poison during a community dinner. Colt receives a call to check out a light inside an abandoned lighthouse closed for renovations. The pair respond only to find evidence of two trespassers, one of which is now dead.

Colt is living with Abby while he mends, and while the couple are enjoying the time they spend together, they both know that there are some hard truths that eventually will need to be dealt with. Georgia and Tanner are having growing pains as they prepare in their own way for the birth of their first child, and Alex is up to her ears in clues, confessions, and leads that go nowhere, when she tries to uncover the truth about the rash of arson fires that seem to be all tangled up with a food truck murder.
