It is strange to consider that, although The Hound Of The Baskervilles is Conan Doyle’s most popular novel, his hero is absent for much of the time. Notice how he sets up an atmosphere of supernatural horror right from the start through Dr Mortimer’s reading of the ancient curse, and how he then presents as assortment of bizarre clues – in particular, the riddle of the missing boots – which Holmes will have to unravel.

The Valley of Fear is the fourth and final Sherlock Holmes novel by Arthur Conan Doyle. This dark tale details an early encounter between Holmes and Professor Moriarty. When Watson and Holmes receive a cipher warning them of evildoing, they're prompted to travel to Sussex, where they discover a corpse with its head blown to pieces.

The country doctor had come to 221B Baker Street, the famous lodgings of Sherlock Holmes, with an eerie tale---the legend of the Hound of the Baskervilles, the devil-beast that haunted the lonely moors around the Baskervilles' ancestral home. The tale warned the descendants of that ancient family never to venture out on the moor "in those dark hours when the powers of evil are exalted."

From the moment Dr. John Watson takes lodgings in Baker Street with the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, he becomes intimately acquainted with the bloody violence and frightening ingenuity of the criminal mind. In A Study in Scarlet, Holmes and Watson's first mystery, the pair are summoned to a south London house where they find a dead man whose face is a twisted mask of horror. The body is unmarked by violence, but on the wall a mysterious word has been written in blood.

An assassination attempt is made on Tsar Nicholas II of Russia at the Hotel Adlon in Berlin. However, the criminal police suspect that the attack was intended for Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, who had received the Russian guest. When Nicholas II commissions Sherlock Holmes to investigate the incident, a second assassination attempt occurs. Holmes and Watson become entangled in the perfidious power games of two superpowers.

Could the sudden death of Sir Charles Baskerville have been caused by the gigantic ghostly hound that is said to have haunted his family for generations? Arch-rationalist Sherlock Holmes characteristically dismisses the theory as nonsense. Claiming to be immersed in another case, he sends Watson to Devon to protect the Baskerville heir and to observe the suspects at close hand.

Adding another layer to the mystery are six pearls in her possession, having received one per year since 1882. The sixth and most recently received pearl was accompanied by a letter asking for a meeting, claiming Ms. Morstan is a wronged woman.

Brought together by a mutual friend, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson discover that they have much more in common than the fact that they're roommates. As Watson begins assisting Sherlock with his work as a consulting detective, he notices that Sherlock has an uncanny ability to assemble deductions based on seemingly minor details.

Trapped by the strength of the public adoration of his character Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle was desperate to write other works not involving the sleuth. The Tales of Terror and Mystery have all the recognisable qualities that made Conan Doyle's work so popular - the attention to gruesome detail, the meticulous logic and the intricate and wittily bemusing plotting - yet they are free of the constraints put on Conan Doyle by Mr. Holmes.

A troubled young woman, Miss Mary Sutherland, arrives at 221B Baker Street in distress. Her fiancé, the mysterious Mr. Hosmer Angel, has vanished on their wedding day without a trace. Her stepfather insists there’s no cause for alarm—yet something in the case feels far from ordinary.
