This is the sweet story of a paralyzed man in Venice who sees out of his window a young girl across the way. Unbeknownst to her, she brightens his days over the course of several years, and he begins to fall in love with her. One day he throws out a flower into the canal between them to say "good morning", and she responds in kind. They still haven't spoken a word, but his heart is lifted. Until, that is, the young maid grows up, and the gondolier boys start calling on her.

"Angela Borgia" ist die letzte von mehreren historischen Novellen von Conrad Ferdinand Meyer. Der aus Zürich stammende Dichter nahm sich für diese erstmals 1891 veröffentlichte Novelle die historischen Figuren der italienischen Fürstin Lucrezia Borgia, der mit ihr verwandten Angela und deren Verehrer Don Giulio zum Vorbild. Der Autor führt den Leser in diesem Prosastück zurück in die Zeit der Renaissance, an den italienischen Fürstenhof von Ferrara.

Wie eine Lichtgestalt erscheint das Mädchen, später die junge Frau, Angela Borgia vor der dunklen Folie der ruchlosen Sippe der Borgias und der Nobilität des seinerzeitigen Italiens. Gegen Ende der Erzählung - der letzten von Conrad Ferdinand Meyer verfassten - hellt sich das düstere Sittenbild etwas auf.
