Celle d'un style tout d'abord, dont Bossuet se réclamera treize siècles plus tard : une "prose poétique" incantatoire, hydraulique et entêtante. Puis celle d'un genre, l'autobiographie : le premier récit rétrospectif d'un "moi" de l'histoire de la littérature occidentale, dont Rousseau s'inspira plus tard.
