When Kalu drops Aima at Lagos Airport, it marks the end of their four-year relationship. Shattered and broken open, he thinks that's the last he will see of his girlfriend. But Aima is drawn back into the city - to the scandalous, decadent nightlife of her best friend. As Kalu grieves, his friend offers him an exclusive invitation to one of his sordid, global parties - a way for Kalu to escape, if only for a night. The Rot is a recalcitrant study of the decaying romances, expired hopes, and abject injustices of the world. A liturgy for girlhood in the dying days of late-stage capitalism, these poems expose the fraying nerves and tendons of a speaker refusing to avert their gaze from the death of Country, death on Country, and the bloody violence of settler colonies here and afar.

Natascha hatte ihr erklärt, dass die Farbe Rot und das Wort schön im Russischen den gleichen Wortstamm haben. Rot ist schön. 1985. Silke ist 15, als die Mutter die Familie mitsamt dem jüngeren Bruder verlässt, erst Brandenburg, später Deutschland den Rücken kehrt. Silke bleibt beim Vater zurück – ohnmächtig, die entstandene Lücke zu schließen. Fortan ist sie auf der Suche: Nach sich selbst, nach einer, ihrer Familie, nach Stabilität, deren Fehlen auch durch den Zusammenbruch der DDR omnipräsent wird. Und liebt dabei so radikal, wie sich das Land um sie herum verändert.
