Taylor Byrd, Bree Scott, and Josie Herrera, best friends, are ending their senior year high school basketball season at Millguard High with hopes of qualifying for a place in the state championship game. The girls are part of military families living near a United States military base. They have been playing basketball at a local recreation center since elementary school. It is only natural that they end up on a high school girls' basketball team together. They are all talented, but Taylor stands out partially because of her six-foot height, which she gets from her father, Col. Willis Byrd.

Cookie Vonn’s dreams include getting out of Phoenix and becoming the next great fashion designer. But in the world of fashion, being fat is a cardinal sin. It doesn’t help that she’s constantly compared to her supermodel mother - and named after a dessert. Cookie scores a trip to New York to pitch her design portfolio, but her plans are put on standby when she’s declared too fat to fly. When she finally arrives, she finds she’s been replaced by her ultrathin rival. Cookie vows to lose weight, get out of the friend zone with her crush, and put her dreams back on track.
