Kevaney Martin has been in the world of sports journalism for over a decade having worked for ABC, CBS, and covered six Super Bowls for Nexstar Media Group. Interestingly, that is not where she started. Out of college, she was signed to Wilhelmina Modeling Agency and walked for brands such as Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, and more. She developed an eating disorder while working in the high fashion industry, and says that changing careers into sports journalism quite literally saved her life.
Some major topics discussed:
- the pressures she faced in the fashion industry, including an eating disorder that dropped her to just 109lbs at 6'1" & how it ultimately made her stronger dealing with appearance standards in the journalism world
- the struggles of being taken seriously as a woman in a male-dominated field
- how a perfectionist, competitive personality can both hinder and help you
- dealing with sexualization and objectification
- difficulties in maintaining relationships in a career that forces you to sacrifice time and stability
