You can be a patriot while also contributing to the world as a whole as long as you have an awareness of the reality outside of your border. Abandon the oppositional mindset of mutual exclusivity. Individual nations can become a cohesive unit of cultural growth so that healthy national identity may eventually give way to a higher scale of global unity. You have to start where you are. Any attempt to "rush" humanity in to a globalized society without tending to the psychological roots of cultural identity will only result in more civil unrest.
