Our department is taking a deep-dive through Taylor Swift's discography from beginning to end. With new episodes releasing weekly on Tuesday mornings, our team is dedicating one season per album and one episode per song with a few bonuses sprinkled in.

We'll be examining relevant background information for each track, as well as looking at songwriting style, literary references, and production choices.

    • Swift Facts: Taylor personally doodled the butterflies shown on the debut album cover.
    • Department Findings: We dive into the background, production, and lyrics of “A Place in this World.”
    • This is one of the few tracks on this album not co-written by Liz Rose.
    • One of those songs that sounds happy until you listen to the lyrics.
    • Rain is a metaphor for sadness, but also trying to sort through everything that’s going wrong all at once.
    • We wonder if Taylor read Robert Frost poems in school and was inspired by “The Road Not Taken.” This isn’t the first time this will come up this season.
    • The notion that the only constant you can really count on is yourself.
    • She’s literally just a girl.
    • The references to blue jeans on this album are adding up. We think this is trying to illustrate simpler times.
    • Karmen points out that “The Prophecy” is the more mature version of this song. In both songs, Taylor is trying to navigate through life and career, while wishing for a bit of human connection and a “place” where she belongs.
    • The Cats Have It: In honor of our favorite cat lady, we’re each going to pick a line from this song and replace one word with “cat.”

    • Swift Facts: Taylor Swift was one of the first musical artists to use MySpace to connect with fans and cultivate a community.
    • Department Findings: We dive into the background, production, and lyrics of “Teardrops On My Guitar.”
    • Which version wins out? The OG album version, country radio version, or pop radio version? Our hosts think nothing beats the OG album version.
    • The music video featured some of Taylor’s friends and family members as extras in the hallways.
    • We go way down the rabbit hole of leather bracelets.
    • “Cuz it’s so damn funny” will forever be the superior lyric.
    • Song co-writer Liz Rose revealed that record executives wanted “Drew” to be changed to “you” to make the song more universal, but Liz and Taylor fought against it. We’re glad she won that battle.
    • The syncopation of the last line of the chorus scratches our brains just right.
    • Amy gets a little carried away diving into the history of wishing stars.
    • More bookending or circular structure to drive home the main themes of this song.
    • Bookending can create a hook by adding familiarity to a line or idea.
    • Tay-Lore: “Teardrops On My Guitar” features the very first time Taylor Swift swears on an album. The debut album actually has another “damn” in “Cold As You.” After “damn” was cleansed from “Teardrops On My Guitar” for radio and future prints of the album, Taylor wouldn’t swear again in her music until Red releases in 2012. That’s six years later.

    • Swift Facts: Taylor Swift’s self-titled debut album holds the record for the longest charting album on the Billboard 200 list for the 2000s decade.
    • Department Findings: We dive into the background, production, and lyrics of “Picture to Burn.”
    • This song might have one of the most recognizable starting guitar licks of any Taylor Swift song.
    • The music video for this song is iconic. It features Taylor’s high school best friend, Abigail, as well as her bandmates (many of whom are still in her band).
    • Taylor’s ties to the NFL actually started way back when… Her ex-boyfriend in this video is played by Justin Sandy, who played in the NFL.
    • The original lyrics of “Picture to Burn” got a cleansing before it went to radio, and in all later releases.
    • We miss country Taylor’s twang.
    • How would Scott Swift threaten his daughter’s ex? Financial intimidation? Tanking his credit? Reporting him to the IRS?
