The Other Side of the Mountain (Illustrated): Mujahideen Tactics in the Soviet-Afghan War

By: Luis Ayala
  • Summary

  • This book complements Les Grau's previous book, "The Bear Went Over the Mountain." the other side of the mountain is a compilation of Mujahideen combat actions against Soviet forces during the Soviet-Afghan War. The 92 vignettes with maps include operational graphics in full color are arranged chronologically and assembled topically, based on type of action, into 14 chapters. The cost of the other side of the mountain is due to the fact that it simply costs more to print a 430 page book in color. We feel color maps are necessary to truly understand what the Mujahideen did and why they were successful.

  • Chapter 4 Attacking a Strong Point
    May 13 2023

Attacking a strong point is often similar to conducting a raid and many of the same tactical considerations and techniques apply. Attackers quickly abandon their objective after a successful raid, while there is usually an intent to hold a captured strong point for some period of time. Therefore, an attack on a strong point generally involves more supplies and heavier armaments. Most often, the strong points were political centers which the Mujahideen wanted to hold for propaganda value.
