August 1746. The Highlands are ash and silence. A boy, late for school, finds a stranger adjusting painted glass beside a mule. The stranger keeps a lantern that throws stories onto a sheet in the dark - scripture, wars, the lives of saints - and crowds weep while he watches the flame. But there is one plate he has never shown. One image he keeps wrapped in cloth in the far corner of his box.
