The youth has run from battle. His courage broken, he falls in with a line of wounded men moving toward the rear. In the course of his time with them, he sees a man of his acquaintance die, in a manner which is both dignified and horrifying.
The youth is left in a state of terrible confusion, oscillating between blaming himself or fate for his behavior, cursing the men who stood and fought, and fantasizing about returning to the battle and doing heroic deeds.
