  • Milestone Episode 100 with Lucas Underwood and David Roman [E100]
    Jun 22 2026
Thank You To Our Partners AutoFlow, Shop Dog Marketing, InBound, and Service Advisor TrainingWatch Full Video EpisodeIn our episode today:It is my great joy to welcome my friends and well-known podcasters, Lucas Underwood and David Roman, as my guests on Episode 100!Why is this special?I had the distinct privilege and honor of being David and Lucas' guest for their 100th episode of the "Changing the Industry" podcast.Which is why today's word of the day is reciprocity. The quality or state of being reciprocal: mutual dependence, action, or influenceIn our conversation, we talk about… well… everything. It’s kind of how things go with these two!Technician pay, owner attentiveness, communication, anger, and social media. Positive changes they've observed in the industry, as well as some of the trends and challenges that we're facing now, including human attention.I particularly enjoyed getting their thoughts on the topic of altruism. We wrapped up with some book recommendations. At the end of the day, my favorite thing about this episode is that while, yes, we celebrate episode 100, I get to do so with people who I’ve celebrated with on theirs. Returning that gesture is a real joy.I hope you enjoy listening in on this conversation and that you, too, feel like you're part of the conversation aligned towards positive change in our industry.Sincerely,Craig O’NeillChanging the Industry Podcast: https://changingtheindustrypodcast.com/Thank You To Our Partners AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, InBound, and Service Advisor TrainingYour partner in technology, Autoflow consolidates your client interactions - before, during, and after the visit to a single thread. • Open 7 Days a Week? The Real Cost of Losing the Weekend [E099]
    Jun 15 2026
Thank You To Our Partners AutoFlow, Shop Dog Marketing, InBound, and Service Advisor TrainingWatch Full Video EpisodeIn this episode, I take on a question that sits at the intersection of economics, history, and something older than both. Should your automotive service facility be open seven days a week? What about Saturdays? And if you stagger the schedule so everyone still gets their days off, is that good enough?I introduce the concept of the network good, the economic principle that a shared day of rest is worth fundamentally more than a private one, and trace it through one of history's stranger experiments: Joseph Stalin's 1929 attempt to replace the seven-day week with a continuous rotating workweek. He had total industrial authority and a radical design. The thing he was trying to replace proved more durable than his system. We also spend some time with Thomas Cahill's “Hingest of History” series investigating the origins of western thought. Beyond that, you'll even learn a few Russian words, as I found it fascinating how their language had built in, deep meaning that no regime could undo.I hope you enjoy this thought provoking topic, and as a takeaway from this episode, that you will consider carefully the potential consequences for all of your team members before you make a decision on your hours for the weekend. The Word of the Day:Synchrony (noun): The state of occurring or existing at the same time. From the Greek syn (together) and chronos (time). Synchrony is not merely simultaneity. It carries the idea of shared time, time that belongs to a group rather than an individual.Sincerely,Craig O'NeillReferencesAlex Mayyasi, "Why Weekends Are Under Threat," The Hustle. • The No Shared Urgency Spiral Culture Crisis [E098]
    Jun 8 2026
Thank You To Our Partners AutoFlow, Shop Dog Marketing, InBound, and Service Advisor TrainingWatch Full Video EpisodeIn our episode today,We explore what happens when a team attempts to adopt change without shared urgency from leadership. Using the Concerns Based Adoption Model (CBAM) as our framework, we walk through the load-bearing rungs of the change adoption ladder, name the six personal objections that keep people stuck at the personal rung, meet the four team archetypes present in any change initiative, and trace the stages by which a facility's most committed change agent is quietly worn away when leadership does not carry the flag.Word of the Day: Attrition. Noun. The process of reducing something through sustained pressure or gradual wearing down, without direct confrontation. The six personal objections: Identity threat. Authority resistance. Perceived cost. Loss of informal power. Delegated accountability without authority. Owner ambiguity. The four behavior types: The quitter, the antagonist, the mercenary, and the crusader. Most of us have been all four at different points in our careers.Your culture is determined by the worst behavior that management tolerates.Shared urgency is not a personality trait. It is a leadership responsibility. This episode was inspired by a topic that I'm working with George Kingman on at Advanced Shop Leadership, where I'll be conducting a workshop on June 5 and 6.If these topics are intriguing to you, please reach out, I’d love to chat, and we'll let you know the next chance you have to join us for a live workshop. In workshops we dive further into topics like these. Thanks for listening!Sincerely,Craig O’NeillThank You To Our Partners AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, InBound, and Service Advisor TrainingYour partner in technology, Autoflow consolidates your client interactions - before, during, and after the visit to a single thread.
