• Episode 1137: The Lowdown 2026 - Scott chats with Rebecca Schiffman
    Feb 1 2026

'Before The Future' is the name of an album and song released mid 2025 by Rebecca Schiffman, an indie artist who grew up in New York and now resides in LA. The song Before The Future is a tender 9 minute nostalgic tale that charts an attraction and close friendship that goes back to Schiffman's teenage years. It's a stunningly beautiful track, meticulousy crafted and produced over several years. It's a tribute to Schiffman's storytelling, songwriting and perseverance to bring this story to life. It was also my favourite song from 2025.

I caught up with Rebecca in late December when she was in New York and again a few weeks later when she was at home in LA to chat about her album 'Before The Future', her music generally, her influences etc. Along the way we touch on long gaps between albums and Schiffman's fear of flying among other things.

Songs featured include 'Before The Future' and 'Bubble Of Love'.

  • Episode 1132: Rob Hirst ....More Than A Drummer - the Oils Backbone
    Jan 27 2026

This is a ribute to an incredible Australian and human being. The late Rob Hirst, drummer and songwriter extraordinaire with iconic Australian band Midnight Oil. To appreciate Hirst’s significance, try to imagine a world where Oils classics like Beds Are Burning, Power and the Passion, The Dead Heart and Armistice Day didn’t exist - or if they did, they sounded very different. Midnight Oil were a band with such a unique dynamic. Rob Hirst - there from the get-go, was intrinsic to their sound, their lyrics, their values, their outspoken confidence and their heart.

Born 1955, Rob Hirst died peacefully age 70yo following a battle with pancreatic cancer in January 2026. Hirst rose to prominence as the drummer for Midnight Oil in Sydney in the late 70s. He was a founding member of the Oils along with Jim Moginie.

Described as “...not the figurehead of Midnight Oil – but he was its backbone” (David Nichols, The Conversation, 21 Jan 2026), unbeknowns to many, Hirst was much more than a drummer in a rock band. He was a chief songwriter, along with Moginie they wrote the majority of Oils songs. There’s a fair case to say that Hirst and Moginie are among the finest handful of songwriters Australia has produced along with the likes of Greg Macainsh (Skyhooks), Don Walker (Cold Chisel) and Paul Kelly.

This is a Rob Hirst Special. It contains lots of Midnight Oil songs and we’ll track through our favourites in chronological order.
It includes some side projects and solo work toward the end of the special. We’re also focusing specifically on the songs that Hirst wrote or co-wrote, hence some Oils classics like Run By Night, Back On The Borderline, US Forces and Weddingcake Island are not here.

Cancer may have claimed Rob Hirst’s body however, it could never claim his spirit. Hirst’s many fans and audiences globally will find inspiration in his songs and his thoughtful messages for decades to come. The definition of legacy. Hirst’s legacy is immense.
