    Apr 14 2026

[B1/B2] Today we are back with Part 2 of our Social Survival Kit for Introverts in Italy! 🎒🇮🇹

Are you terrified of getting ripped off by a taxi driver? Or do you panic when a pushy shop assistant approaches you the second you walk into a boutique? Don't worry, my husband Eric (playing the worst taxi driver and the most annoying shop assistant ever!) and I are here to help.

I will teach you the ultimate "shield phrases" (frasi scudo) to cut conversations short, be effective, and survive your day out in Italy without stressing over your grammar.

In this episode, we will learn how to handle:

    • 🚕 Taxi Anxiety: How to politely ask for an estimated price before the ride starts so you don't get a bad surprise.

    • 🗣️ The Talkative Driver: How to stop the "small talk" when you just want to look out the window in silence.

    • 🛑 The Drop-off: The perfect phrase to tell the driver exactly where to stop ("Mi lasci pure qui...").

    • 🛍️ "Just Looking": The magic phrase to politely get rid of a pushy shop assistant the moment you enter the store.

    • 👗 The Fitting Room: How to say you don't like the clothes you just tried on without feeling awkward ("Non mi convincono").

  • 39. Ritorno in Sicilia: Tradizioni, contrasti e la vera Festa di San Giuseppe
    Mar 31 2026

[B2] Today, I want to share a very special and personal family trip I took to Sicily with my father.

We visited Leonforte, a town in the Sicilian hinterland, to celebrate the Festa di San Giuseppe, a local festival my dad hadn't seen in 50 years! This episode is a journey into an Italy you might not know yet—a place full of deep contrasts, breathtaking traditions, and complex realities.

In this episode, we will explore:

    • 👵🏻 The Generational Clash: My 83-year-old great-aunt's harsh dialect expressions (marruggiata and chiummata) and her nostalgia for a strict, "sincere" past where children used the formal "voi" with their parents.

    • 🧳 The "Foreigner at Home": The story of a local barista who lived abroad for 20 years and returned to Sicily, highlighting the psychological struggle of adapting to a place that hasn't changed.

    • 🥖 La Festa di San Giuseppe: The incredible traditions of March 18-19, including the beautiful food altars (artara), special breads, and the moving procession.

    • 🏛️ The Two Faces of Sicily: The sadness of seeing stunning Baroque architecture crumbling and abandoned, directly contrasted with the incredible, genuine hospitality of locals who cooked fresh arancini for us at closing time.
