    May 11 2026

Christology is the study of the person and work of Jesus Christ. It explores his pre-incarnate existence (before He came into the world); his humiliation (His life, suffering, and death on earth); and his exaltation and ongoing ministry (His resurrection, intercession, and future return as Judge and King)

It is important that we understand all of these fully because, the power of Christ’s saving work depends entirely on the truth of who He is. If Jesus is not truly God, His death cannot save. If Jesus is not truly man, He cannot stand in our place. Everything rests on getting His person and His work right. This is vital because salvation is accomplished through Him, the church exists because of Him and the future is determined by Him. If you remove a right understanding of Christ and the entire Christian faith collapses.

The entire Bible points to Him. In the Old Testament he is anticipated from as early as Genesis while the New Testament reveals and explains Him.

And yet this is exactly where people go wrong. Not always by rejecting Jesus outright, but by misunderstanding Him. That is what we see in this passage.

Two disciples are walking away from Jerusalem, the very place where the greatest event in history has just happened. They are not hostile to Jesus. They are not indifferent. They are disappointed.

Their words capture it: “We had hoped…” Hope in the past tense. And here is the irony: They are walking away from the very place where their hope has just been fulfilled.

And even more striking, Jesus Himself is walking with them…And yet they do not recognize Him.

So as we begin this series on Christology, we are asking one central question: Do we truly understand who Jesus is as He reveals Himself in all of Scripture?

Big Idea: To truly understand Jesus, you must interpret well and believe all Scripture.

These disciples began their journey: Confused, Discouraged, and Walking away without hope, but everything changed when Jesus corrected their understanding by opening the Scriptures to them.

Friends, let Scripture correct your expectations, reshape your understanding and replace your discouragement

To Non-Christians, do not settle for a misunderstood Jesus. Come to Him, the suffering Savior and the risen Lord who saves us from our sins and reconciles us to God Almighty.

Are you walking with Jesus but misunderstanding Him—or are you seeing Him clearly through all of Scripture?
