Am Anfang war der Whisky… Falls ihr denkt, dass jede gute Geschichte mit dieser Phrase beginnt, dann seid ihr bei uns garantiert richtig. Alles begann damit, dass wir wie jeden Freitagabend in trauter Runde saßen und Whisky tranken, bis die Frage aufkam: Wieso sollten wir unsere privaten “Tastings” nicht in ein Online-Format verpacken? So entstand der Podcast und die Idee zu GRAB THE GLASS in nur einer Nacht.

    In Folge 219 wird es ungewohnt glamourös bei Grab The Glass: Wir sind starstruck. Zumindest ein bisschen. Denn auf dem Tisch stehen zwei Whiskys mit Hollywood-Anschluss – einmal Glenmorangie mit Harrison Ford und einmal Wild Turkey Longbranch mit Matthew McConaughey. Der Abend beginnt mit offenen Fenstern, weil es schlicht zu heiß ist, um das Studio komplett abzuriegeln. Aus dem Hot Toddy wird beinahe ein Hot Taddy, Willem Dafoe ist aus Preisgründen nicht dabei, und dann geht es direkt in die Frage, wer eigentlich mehr Oscar im Glas hat. Harrison Ford? Matthew McConaughey? Oder am Ende doch der Whisky selbst? Der Glenmorangie Harrison Ford Limited Edition bringt Schottland, Star-Wars-Nostalgie und eine ziemlich große Marketingkampagne zusammen. „Once Upon a Time in Scotland“ heißt die kleine Filmreihe dazu – und Harrison Ford sagt darin offenbar vor allem eins sehr überzeugend: „Nice.“ Im Glas wird daraus ein überraschend warmer, milder und angenehm vielschichtiger Highland Single Malt. Danach kommt Wild Turkey Longbranch ins Glas, die Kentucky-Texas-Verbindung von Matthew McConaughey. Mesquite-Holzkohle, Barbecue-Assoziationen, Sandelholz, Kohle und eine gewisse Eigenwilligkeit sorgen dafür, dass dieser Bourbon nicht einfach nur der zweite Promi-Whisky des Abends bleibt. Am Ende steht ein Duell, das deutlich besser ausfällt als befürchtet: zwei Schauspieler, zwei Marken, zwei sehr unterschiedliche Whiskys – und die Erkenntnis, dass Marketing nicht automatisch schlimm schmecken muss.     Es ist heiß, die Vorbereitungslage ist mindestens diskutabel – und trotzdem steht plötzlich Glenglassaugh auf dem Tisch. Oder Glenglassau. Oder Glenglass-augh. Ganz einig sind wir uns am Anfang nicht, aber immerhin passt der Name verdächtig gut zu Grab The Glass. Auch wenn das „Glass“ darin leider nichts mit unserem Glas zu tun hat. Christian hat zwei Abfüllungen der schottischen Highland-Destillerie mitgebracht: den Glenglassaugh Evolution und den Glenglassaugh Torfa. Der eine knüpft mit seinen First-Fill-Tennessee-Whiskey-Fässern noch ganz hübsch an unsere letzte Brown-Forman-Folge an, der andere sorgt schon vor dem Einschenken für leichte Fluchtgedanken. Schließlich steht da Torfa drauf – und manche Menschen reagieren auf Rauch im Whisky ungefähr so entspannt wie andere auf Pizza Hawaii. Hendrik nimmt uns vorher mit durch die ziemlich wechselhafte Geschichte der Brennerei: gegründet 1875, mehrfach verkauft, lange geschlossen, im Zweiten Weltkrieg zweckentfremdet, später wiederbelebt und irgendwann bei Brown-Forman gelandet. Dazu gibt es die übliche Mischung aus Fakten, Abschweifungen, Flaschenverschluss-Kompetenz und der Frage, ob ein Imagevideo mit plätscherndem Wasser eigentlich eine Schleife ist. Im Glas geht es dann von hell, frisch und ziemlich zitruslastig hinüber zu Rauch, Speck, Torf und der Grundsatzfrage, ob „mild rauchig“ wirklich mild ist, wenn man Rauch grundsätzlich nicht bestellt hat. Außerdem: ein möglicher Barista-Exkurs, ein „Ring of Zitrus“, sehr viel Highland-Verwirrung und eine kleine Vorschau auf eigene Fass-Spielereien mit Moscatel und Port. Grab the glass!     Heute wird es familienträchtig bei Grab The Glass – allerdings nicht mit Kuchen, sondern mit Löffelverbot, Jack Daniel’s als heimlichem Kontrollglas und zwei amerikanischen Whiskeys, die enger miteinander verbandelt sind, als man zuerst denkt. Christian hat vom Yokohama Whisky and Spirits Festival 2026 den Uncle Nearest 1856 mitgebracht. Und der führt direkt in die Vorgeschichte von Jack Daniel’s: Nathan „Nearest“ Green gilt heute als erster bekannter afroamerikanischer Master Distiller und soll Jack Daniel das Destillieren beigebracht haben. Besonders spannend ist dabei der Lincoln County Process, also die Filtration durch Zuckerahorn-Holzkohle, die Tennessee Whiskey so stark geprägt hat. Ausgerechnet diese lange übersehene Geschichte landet nun als 50%-Whiskey im Glas. Dazu kommt der Old Forester 86 Proof, und auch der bringt ordentlich Historie mit. George Garvin Brown war ursprünglich im pharmazeutischen Umfeld unterwegs, Whisky galt damals auch als medizinisches Produkt, und Old Forester wurde 1870 als erster Bourbon ausschließlich in versiegelten Glasflaschen verkauft. Benannt wurde er nach Dr. William Forrester – damals noch mit zwei „r“, bevor aus dem Forrester der Forester wurde. Medizin, Marketing und Bourbon lagen selten so nah beieinander. Im Glas wird es dann deutlich weniger museal. Der Uncle Nearest startet süß, kräftig und gefährlich trinkbar: Toffee, Karamell, Roggenwürze, Spezi-Gefühl – und natürlich die große Frage, ob da nun Banane drinsteckt oder nicht. Silvi sagt nein, andere Nasen und Zungen im Raum sind anderer Meinung. Beim Old Forester wird die Runde kritischer: Vanille, klassische Bourbon-Anklänge, aber weniger Tiefe, weniger Süße und insgesamt eher die Kategorie „kann man trinken, aber der andere war besser“. Als wäre das nicht genug, wird zwischendurch auch noch Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 als Vergleichsobjekt herangezogen. Ergebnis: noch mehr Uneinigkeit über Süße, Banane und Vollmundigkeit. Dazu kommt Peppy (unser Hund), die ihr Kau-Ding schon vor der Aufnahme erledigt hat, eine mögliche Bernsteinfolge, eine Distillen-Checkliste mit Prohibition, Feuer und Wiedereröffnung – und die Erkenntnis, dass Whiskeygeschichte manchmal klingt wie ein Familienalbum mit ziemlich vielen angeheirateten Verwandten.
