Everyone lives with a relentless quest to be righteous and measure up to the scorecards of life, yet Romans 1–3 shows that no one can meet God’s standard and all stand condemned. But now God has revealed a righteousness apart from the law through faith in Jesus Christ, offering as a gift what we could never achieve.

Romans Vol. 1 - Coming Under Grace

Before we can understand the solution Paul gives in Romans 3:21 and following, we must agree with his diagnosis in Romans 1:18–3:20 that our deepest problem is sin that makes us accountable to a holy God and subject to His wrath. Until we see that every mouth is stopped and the whole world stands guilty before Him, we will not grasp why the gospel is truly good news or why faith in Christ is our only hope.

The Book of Psalms
Psalm 23

Psalm 42 invites us to wrestle honestly with our emotions and to consider how God intends them to function in the life of a believer. As the psalmist acknowledges the depth of what he feels but refuses to be led by it, we learn to hope in God by anchoring our lives in truth rather than in the rise and fall of our feelings.
