  • Clear, Calm, Alive: Cold Plunge

    My family and I were walking through the Black Forest in Germany one summer day and happened upon a natural spring plunge pool. It wasn’t very big, so maybe pool is the wrong word to describe it. It was about 6 feet wide and maybe 20 feet long and about 5 feet deep. There were steps that went down into seriously cold water and we were meant to swim/walk to the other side to exit on another set of stairs. Our daughter swam across, squealing and elated. Our son swam in silence and came out shivering. My husband walked across, completely invigorated.

    And then it was my turn…I descended the stairs and the water hit just above my waist - around my sternum (solar plexus chakra!) and that’s when I felt a squeeze that shuddered through my entire body. When my chest squeezed, I felt my heart pounding and a panic awoke that made me cry out for help. My hand flew to my chest, I gasped for air. My husband pulled me out immediately.

    I have no heart conditions. I have no circulatory conditions. So what in the hell was that?!?

    I’m sitting down with Kris Rice to learn more about the sacred practice (and yes, I do mean sacred) of the cold plunge. I want to know everything, and I want to learn right alongside you!

    In this conversation, Kris shares her journey into cold plunging, a practice she initially resisted but eventually embraced as a means of personal growth and self-care. The discussion highlights the challenges of overcoming judgment from others and the importance of trying new things for mental well-being.

    Whenever I hear the words, “midlife crisis” they are always followed up by that song singing in my head. I have no idea why. And the whole scene makes me giggle.

    Midlife is filled with challenges…and they don’t need to be a crisis. We’re not making a comeback, we’ve been here for years…and we have so much knowledge and experience to help us navigate the rest of our lives!

    You are going to LOVE Deb Foster just as much as me. I met Deb when I was a guest on her podcast, Gen X Juggler. The connection was IMMEDIATE. She is so incredibly kind, caring, and authentic! And boy isn’t that what we all need as we navigate our life journeys?

    Deb speaks to all of us Gen Xers and if you’re close to my age, Listener, (eh hem…53 and proud of it!) then you’re probably going through some major life changes.

    For me, we have 2 adult children. Our daughter is 25, launching into her career and we are here to support her. Our son is 22, entering into his last year of undergraduate and exploring the world to discover who he is and what he wants to create with his life.

    Our parents are independent, but aging. Our bodies are changing. Our daily schedules are changing.

Life actually became much more demanding–with aging parents to care for, one child still at home, becoming a grandparent, and the emotional rollercoaster of her older children leaving home to start their own adult lives.
