Daryl meets Storyville Madame, Countess Willie Piazza . Even though Storyville prostitution was stopped by city ordinance in 1917, Madams like the countess continued to live in their brothel mansions well into the 1920's. Daryl is invited to stay a la maison and receive treatment for his heroin and alcohol addiction. He recovers, and starts a new lease on life. Daryl becomes wealthy selling his patented radio components to large radio manufacturers in the 1930's. He meets Nick Nicolas 3rd. while on a business trip riding the 20th Century Express from New York to Chicago.
