  • 122 - The Pause That Refreshes
    Oct 30 2023

After the stock market crash in 1929, times were tough and moral was low. Coca Cola created a marketing campaign with the slogan, “The pause that refreshes”. It became more than a simple tagline but a cultural catchphrase. It served as a reminder to take a moment, to pause, and to enjoy a refreshing break and drink Coke of course!

In this episode, Genny spoke about the importance of taking a pause; of taking a moment to consider whether you need to make changes in your life or to consider a new direction. She spoke about considering the pros and cons of a decision but then listening to your body as to whether it’s the right decision or not.

Genny shared a poem by Tanner Olson entitled, “This is not the End” that spoke to her about this topic, especially these words, “So, before you move onto the next thing, pause. Sit with what is. Just for a moment.”

She also shared that she is taking a pause from the podcast for now. She mentioned needing to devote some time to a few projects that need her attention. But she also mentioned wanting to be available for the birth of her grandson; of wanting more time with her granddaughter Leni; and just taking some time.

  • 121 - Roses and Thorns
    Oct 13 2023

“Some people grumble that roses have thorns. I am grateful that thorns have roses.”

    - Alphone Kerr

In this episode, Genny spoke about recently celebrating the Canadian Thanksgiving; a time to give thanks for the good in your life. She thought about whether we should offer thanks every day, perhaps in the form of affirmations of gratitude or writing down things that we are grateful for each day.

She shared the story of how she asks her students at the University of Winnipeg PACE to share a rose (one thing they are grateful for that day) and a thorn (one challenge that the are experiencing that day). Her friend Natalie Suppes introduced her to that concept a few years ago.

Sometimes, you need to stop and smell the roses, and appreciate the beauty and wonder in your life; and be mindful of the thorns and try to minimize the discomfort in your life.

  • 120 - Shelby Olson, Co-Owner of Beauty Bark Chocolate
    Oct 2 2023

Chocolate that makes you glow from the inside out. You can find that saying on the home page of the Beauty Bark website.

In this episode, Genny spoke with Shelby Olson, co-owner (along with her partner Evgeny Gotfrid) of Beauty Bark. It's a local Winnipeg company that produces Canada’s first naturally sweetened chocolate bark made with organic cacao and organic mushroom extracts.

Shelby shared the story of how and why they created Beauty Bark. She always loved chocolate but found that eating most of the chocolate available in the stores started to have an adverse effect on her system, affecting the inside and outside of her body, especially during certain times of the month. She knew there had to be a healthier product out there but when she couldn’t find it, she decided to create one for herself.

After experimenting with different ingredients, she and Evgeny created a chocolate that contains no refined sugar and is sweetened with the purest maple syrup. They also added functional mushroom extracts (known for their incredible health benefits), selecting Chaga and Tremella, two powerful mushrooms known for their immune-boosting, digestion-improving, and skin-benefiting properties. Tremella is also known as the "beauty mushroom" for its anti-aging properties in addition to its skin benefits. That inspired them to call their product "Beauty Bark".

As well, they wanted a guilt-free chocolate that not only tastes delicious and promotes overall health and well-being but also one that you can feel good about.

“Not all who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

In this episode, Genny spoke with her friend Stephanie Robinson. A graphic designer for the past 20 years, Stephanie shared how she came up with the name, “The Culture Detective”. It was over a conversation with her best friend, Teri Hoffard, as to what her strengths were and what she could do in her spare time or, more precisely, what she was already doing. Stephanie liked the name and thought it was a perfect outlet for her creative strengths and talents.

She shared that being The Culture Detective entails travel, eats, and style – her three pillars. It’s about experiences; about seeking out adventures and then creating stories and content, whether it’s nature, being a tourist in your own city, or discovering new coffee shops!

Speaking of which, Genny and Stephanie share a love of coffee. In fact, they first connected on Instagram and one day, Genny invited Stephanie to meet her for coffee. And that was the beginning of a wonderful friendship.

  • 117 - Walk This Way
    Sep 11 2023

In this episode, Genny spoke about being inspired by the song, “Walk This Way” by Aerosmith to talk about walking. And speaking of inspiration, she shared the story of how Aerosmith was inspired to write this song.

Genny shared that according to vocabulary.com, there are 25 ways of walking such as hiking, strolling, and striding. And, depending on the type of walking you do, it will determine the different types of benefits that you can experience. For instance, the physical benefits of walking include strengthening bones and muscles; improving muscle endurance and cardiovascular fitness; maintaining healthy body weight; and aiding in digestion. And even though it is recommended you walk a minimum of 10,000 steps per day, just walking 30 minutes per day will still give you all those physical benefits.

In addition, walking can help with mental and emotional health by reducing stress and anxiety, lifting your spirits, and boosting your energy. As well, walking releases endorphins that make you feel good and increases serotonin, which makes you feel happy.

  • 116 - Expect the Unexpected
    Sep 5 2023

“Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!” – Monty Python’s Flying Circus

In this episode, Genny spoke about the movie, “Sliding Doors”, where the character (played by Gwyneth Paltrow), catches the train but in an alternate storyline, misses the train. She also mentioned the adage, “when one door closes, another opens” in reference to embracing possibilities and opportunities.

To expect the unexpected is to know there will be surprises along the way and that things cannot be controlled. Life is imperfect so it’s important to be prepared for anything at anytime. It’s about embracing surprises and enjoying the anticipation. It’s staying flexible and going with the flow, and not getting too attached to your plans or your routines. Leave some wiggle room for the unexpected.

Finally, Genny suggests to always have a plan b or a backup plan. It’s helps to deal with the unexpected and build your resilience.

  • 115 - Coffee Chat with Matthew Sieben, Owner Railway Roasters
    Aug 28 2023

“As a roaster, you need to have a passion for coffee, a passion for people, and immense pride in your work.” - Adri Roux, Owner of Rouxbean Coffee Roastery

In this episode, Genny spoke with Matthew Sieben, owner of Railway Roasters. A chartered professional accountant and partnerships manager with Gustin Quon, he discovered his passion for coffee on a road trip driving a school friend to Victoria. Along the way, they stopped in Calgary and stayed at an Airbnb. The next morning, the owner took them to her favourite coffee shop, which was Phil & Sebastian, located in downtown Calgary. It was the first time Matthew had coffee that was “made with intention” and that was “pretty special”, which inspired him to want to know more about “this black bean water soup that we call coffee.”

After passing his CPA exam, he wanted to learn more about the roasting process so he took a course at Mill City Roasters in Minneapolis. And that started him on his “passion project” to create Railway Roasters, which is an homage to his family’s involvement with the CNN railway.

Matthew is participating as a vendor at the MB Food Fest on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at the St Norbert Art Centre.
