“I don’t know where all the Black people are!?”“There are not a lot of Black people here.”“Where do Black folk kick it?”“This is the most non-Black place I have ever lived.”“Where are the Black neighborhoods and communities?These questions and statements may cause one to imagine a small rural town or a city in Montana or North Dakota. However, these remarks are not made in reference to American spaces typically associated with whiteness but rather a major U.S. city in California, San Diego to be exact.

In this podcast, we explore the experiences of Black people living in San Diego and San Diego County. According to 2024 statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, of the nearly 1,400,000 people living in San Diego, California, 5.6% are Black. The visual disparity of Black people and spaces often leads many Black people to ask, “Where are the Black people?” This podcast explores this question by seeking to understand the experiences of Black people living in San Diego and how Black people in San Diego create place, build and find community. With the goal of capturing the diversity of Black voices and experiences, each episode features a different host and a different interviewee.Welcome to Black San Diego.

In this episode, Renee White, owner of Royal Creations Beauty Supply & Salon, discusses growing up Black in San Diego, building community through business ownership and social networks, and creating spaces where Black people can feel seen and connected. Renee also reflects on the importance of supporting Black-owned businesses, community events, and the ways Black San Diegans continue to build community in a city where the Black population is small but thriving.
