Today, we’re diving into a conversation that seems to surface in every generation: What makes music “Christian enough”? From rock to rap to the genre-bending sounds of artists like Forest Frank, there’s always a new style that challenges what came before.

Why does it seem that we discuss the issue of “Christian music” over and over again? Why do believers so often wrestle with the question: Can’t I just enjoy all genres? Does God care about the sound, or is it really just about the heart?

This isn’t a new debate — when Christian rock first emerged, it stretched what was comfortable. When Christian hip hop arrived, the conversation sparked again. And now, with artists pushing creative boundaries, we’re asking the same questions once more.

Question To Consider:
  • What is music? Where are its origins discussed in the Bible?
  • Why has each generation of younger people “tested the limits” of what’s been previously accepted as ‘Christian music?’
  • What Actually Makes Music Christian?
  • Is it okay to enjoy music from all genres, as long as it doesn’t pull me away from Christ?
  • Does what the artist intends matter more, or does how the listener uses the music carry more weight?
  • Can’t I just enjoy all genres? Do I have to draw a line? Who (or what) decides where that line is?
  • How can I bring these questions about music and my heart before the Lord?
