About this listen

Welcome to Ambitious Fishes! The podcast where we learn and advocate about disability specifically within the experience of college. I'm Janmariz and I use this platform to share my own experiences and invite wonderful disabled friends of mine to connect and do the same. With a new topic each week, we discuss academics, accommodations, social life, romantic relationships, doctor's visits, barriers within education, and more. Join us as we embark on this journey navigating the choppy waters of higher education as disabled people. Until then- Stay Ambitious, Fishes!

Welcome Back, Fishes! Please enjoy the first official episode of Ambitious Fishes in which we discuss learning disabilities and neurodivergency's affect on one's life path and experience within schools, diagnosis processes, disability in the workplace, and so much more. I was joined by my mentor, Dr.John Zilvinskis- An associate professor in the Student Affairs Administration program in the College for Community and Public Affairs.

Up until minute 20, we learn about John, his identity, and his journey with Disability and on the road to Higher Ed. From minutes 20 until minute 40, I talk about my journey deciding to pursue a college career and falling in love with univeristy after being so de-motivated to come to Binghamton or any school at all! From minute 40 to one hour, we talk about diagnosis processes, the struggle to self-identity or come to terms with a disabled label, and spoon theory. Until the end, we talk about intersectionality and tie all these ideas back together in the context of higher education. What do you want to see next?

Welcome Back, Fishes! Lots of laughs in this episode with my friend, Kedra in which we talk about acommodations. Because this episode's audio got a little funky because of issues while recording, I'm going to post this as a bonus! So I can promise next episode will be bigger, better, and brighter so stay tuned! This audio is extracted from a video recording, which was mentioned but will not be released. Instead the transcripts of all my podcasts will be available as a document rather than just captions across platforms to hopefully expand access to these wondersful stories.
