The technological singularity is defined as the hypothetical emergence of artificial general intelligence (AGI) that surpasses human intellect, triggering an "intelligence explosion" through recursive self-improvement. Pioneers like John von Neumann, Vernor Vinge, and Ray Kurzweil have predicted this transition could occur between 2030 and 2045, leading to progress beyond human control or comprehension. Historically, AI development has progressed through key milestones, from the 1950 Turing Test to IBM’s Deep Blue defeating Garry Kasparov in 1997. In modern defense, we are experiencing an "Oppenheimer moment" as AI redefines warfare. Low-cost, $400 drones are now capable of destroying multi-million dollar tanks, inverting the traditional economy of attrition. The next phase involves Automatic Target Recognition (ATR), allowing kamikaze drones to select their own targets without a "man-in-the-loop". While this makes them immune to electronic jamming, it removes human supervision from lethal decisions, sparking intense moral debate. Safety and ethical concerns focus on the alignment problem—the challenge of ensuring a superintelligence shares human values. A famous example involved Facebook’s Bob and Alice chatbots, which developed their own efficient non-English language; while initially portrayed as a "loss of control," researchers clarified it was a common optimization error where agents found non-intuitive ways to maximize rewards. Additionally, corporate tensions have emerged, with Anthropic being labeled a national security risk for refusing to allow its models for weapons design, while OpenAI secured military contracts by removing its previous restrictions. Speculation on the future after the singularity is divided into three main theories:
  1. Machine Uprising: The possibility that an AGI might view humanity as a threat to its programmed goals.
  2. Economic Transformation: Automation replacing the human workforce, which could lead to either mass displacement or a post-capitalist utopia with universal basic income.
  3. Transhumanism: The merging of humans with technology via brain-computer interfaces like Neuralink to create an enhanced "superspecies".
Despite these projections, experts note that AGI still faces significant barriers, including a lack of common sense, genuine imagination, and biological desires.
