Summary

＜あらすじ＞
西郡至は学問もよくでき、武芸に秀で、品も良く人づきあいも決して悪くない、寡黙で、謙虚で、愛想のよい男である。
灰島市郎兵衛にしても同様、少し頑固なところはあるが、若手のあいだには親切な老人として評判のいい人物であった。
別々にみると二人ともごく良い人間なのだが、この二人が顔を合わせると必ずといってもよいほど何かしら口争いが始まるのである。
ある年の夏。大暴風雨に襲われ決壊した堤防の復旧工事に着手した作事奉行灰島市郎兵衛は、事務上の加役として、八木次郎太と西郡至を選んだ。
果たしてこれが無事に納まってゆくのかどうか、まわりの人たちはそれを疑うというよりも、いまにきっと始まるぞという興味の眼をみはっていた。
