僕の知人Tは無職の遊民で、お金も大して持っていないのに遊び暮らしていた。

このTには美人でよく出来た妻がいた。妻が嫌いではないが、満足していなかったTは奇想天外な遊びを思いついた。自分の妻が、自分以外の男、つまり間男と接するさまを覗き見たいというのだった。

ある夜のこと、Tは暗い寝室で眠る妻の布団の中に、変装して忍び入り、妻が寝入るのを確かめると、また手早く服を着て、そっと家から抜け出した。妻は違和感を覚えながらも、夫が夜更かしして帰宅したのだと思っていたのだった。
だがその翌朝、目を覚ました妻はどこにもいない夫と、見知らぬシガレット・ケースに驚く。朝帰りした夫Tに青い顔で聞いてみると、昨夜は家に帰ってないし、そんなシガレット・ケースは知らないと言い張るのであった……



＜江戸川乱歩＞

江戸川乱歩（えどがわ・らんぽ）

日本の推理小説家。1894年10月21日生まれ、三重県生まれ。筆名は、19世紀の米国の小説家エドガー・アラン・ポーに由来する。数々の職業遍歴を経て作家デビューを果たす。本格的な推理小説と並行して『怪人二十面相』、『少年探偵団』などの少年向けの推理小説なども多数手がける。代表作は『人間椅子』、『黒蜥蜴』、『陰獣』など。1954年には乱歩の寄付を基金として、後進の推理小説作家育成のための「江戸川乱歩賞」が創設された。(c)2018 Pan Rolling Asian Genre Fiction Literary Fiction World Literature
