宮沢賢治童話の名作シリーズの第２として、５編を収録。「風の又三郎」は、宮沢賢治の代表的作品。山あいの小さな分教場に変わった風貌の転校生高田三郎が現れた。最初はお互い緊張していたが、やがて打ち解け、高原の野原で馬追いに興じたり、川で発破漁に遭遇して魚を捕ったりして遊んだ。しかし、又三郎が転校してきてからわずか12日目に、台風一過とともに、彼はまた風のように転校していってしまった。
みにくい姿かたち故に、ほかの鳥からさげすまれ続けたよだかが、この世を捨てまっすぐ大空にのぼり青白く燃える星になった「よだかの星」。
　虔十は子ども達に馬鹿にされながらも、何事も一生懸命で、無心に杉の木の枝打ちもし、杉の植林を終わるが、 やがて亡くなってしまう。それから何十年も月日がたち、虔十が植えて立派に育った杉林は今も変わらず人々に憩いをもたらしているという、心温まる「虔十公園林」。岩手山麓の不思議な名前の四つの森と人間のたのしい交歓を描く「狼森と笊森、盗森」。他の猫の書記たちにいつも意地悪ばかりされている書記の窯猫を描く「猫の事務所」。
